There were 12 Youth Entrepreneurship students from the Southwestern Kansas Region (Dodge City, Garden City, Scott City, and Liberal) that took part in the 2016 “Flyers” Business Plan Competition which began at 10:00 a.m. yesterday (April 28) morning at the Scott City Public Library and concluded at 2:00 p.m.
These students were either their school’s classroom winners or selected as “at large” qualifiers based on their “executive summary” business plan write-ups that were submitted and evaluated by various YE program managers around Kansas.
Students then met back up at the Majestic at 6:30 p.m. that evening for an awards banquet were other YE students from the SW region also competed with each other by presenting “trade show display boards” that promoted each student’s business and by delivering short sales pitches to various judges as they looked at their displays.
Scott City YE student Kylee Trout was one of two students who was provided the opportunity to speak at the awards ceremony giving her impressions of the class and expressing how she benefited from her various YE experiences this year.
In the “Flyers” Business Plan Competition, Lizzy Eikenberry placed 1st overall earning a $1,000.00 YE scholarship and Irvin Lozano placed 2nd overall earning a $750.00 scholarship. This qualified both of them for the Final “Flyers” State Competition to be held in Wichita on June 2 at the Intrust Bank.
Emily Glenn took home the award for Best Overall Trade Show Display winning her a $50.00 cash prize and Trella Davis won the Best Overall Business Idea, also earning a $50.00 cash prize.
Emily Glenn was also recognized for earning over 500 YE Academy points throughout the year by participating in a variety of YE activities. She will be able to cash these points in later for scholarship money.
Kevin Reese, the SCHS YE classroom instructor, was also awarded the SW Region YE Teacher of the Year.
Mr. Reese and the YE class would like to thank all of those local business people and civic organizations for all that they do to help this class be so successful. This support allow this class to continue to participate in this program and provide students with such a unique and beneficial experience.
